Hazards of Modern Medicine Pertaining to Sinusitis
Avoided by Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health
Drugs of "Modern" Medicine and their side effects
The most common drugs used to treat chronic sinusitis are:
Antibiotics
Corticosteroid sprays
Decongestants
Antihistamines.
1. Antibiotics
Antibiotics are used to kill the bacteria in the sinuses. Since it is difficult
to know exactly which bacteria are in the sinuses, the antibiotics used target
the most common bacteria. The antibiotics destroy the bacteria in the sinuses by
interfering with their ability to make proteins.
Two common antibiotics used to treat chronic sinusitis are: ampicillin and
tetracycline. Because antibiotics do not penetrate into the sinuses very well,
they are prescribed for an extended period of time, typically from 3 to 8 weeks
for chronic sinusitis. Another complication is that many bacteria have built up
a resistance to the most commonly used antibiotics, requiring newer and more
expensive antibiotics to be prescribed in order to have an effect.
Side Effects
Side effects of antibiotics include:
nausea and vomiting
diarrhea
irritation of the mouth and throat.
2. Corticosteroid sprays
Corticosteroid sprays are used with the goal of clearing the sinuses to prevent
further infection. The cortisone reduces the inflammation inside the nose and
around the sinus openings. Some of the most common sprays used are
beclomethasone, triamcinolone, dexamethasone and flunisolide.
Side Effects
trouble breathing
swelling of the face
difficulty swallowing
3. Decongestants and mucolytics
Decongestants such as pseudoephedrine, and mucolytics such as guaifenesin are
used to thin the mucus in the sinuses.
Side Effects
Side effects of decongestants include:
nausea and vomiting
insomnia
headache
trembling
weakness
4. Antihistamines.
Antihistamines are generally used for non-infectious sinusitis primarily caused
by allergies. They are not good for infectious sinusitis since they dry out
the sinuses, creating an environment that stimulates bacterial growth.
Side Effects
Side effects of antihisaimines include:
drowsiness
blurred vision
ringing in the ears
abdominal pain
